I selected the Instructional Systems Performance Improvement/Human Resources Development focus  in order to align my learnings with those required in a corporate, rather than academic environment.  I attained a graduate certificate in  Human Performance Technology (HPT) through participation in courses marked with an asterisk (*)  below.

Human Resource Development

Course Description: This course offers a comprehensive survey of the structure and function of human-resource development in organizations. Focus is on alternative perspectives, professional roles and competencies, as well as on the organizational features affecting Human-Resource Development operations and programs.

Course Description: This course covers the theory and practice of staff training and development based on the designand use of experiential instructional interventions meant to enhance individual, group, and organizational efforts.

Introduction to Program Evaluation

Course Description: This course introduces the conceptual issues and practical guidelines for conducting a program evaluation. This course will define and discuss the concepts and explore the theoretical basis of the diverse models and alternative approaches to program evaluation.

 

Key Learnings:  Use of theoretical orientations and logic models in evaluation methodology, data analysis and creation of an evaluation proposal, formation of evaluation questions.

Qualitative Research & Evaluation

Course Description: This course assists students to develop an understanding of the qualitative research paradigm. Specifically, students will acquire skills in qualitative research design, data collection and analysis. Students will learn how to assess the validity/credibility of qualitative results, along with the political context and philosophical issues associated with research paradigm.

Course Description: This course focuses on the applications of prominent contemporary theories of learning, cognition, and information processing to instructional settings.

Introduction to Instructional Systems

Course Description: This course is an overview of systems theory applied to instructional systems development and includes principles and procedures for developing total instructional systems. In the course, students learn about the systematic approach to instructional design, the contexts in which this approach is applied, and the roles instructional systems professionals in the instructional design and performance improvement processes.

 

Key Learnings:  Systemic approach to organizational analysis, scrutiny of ISD models to determine correct approach conducting front end analysis that includes needs assessment, learner and environmental analysis.

Web 2.0 Learning

Summer 2015               Instructor:   Dr. Vanessa Dennen                                                                                      Final Grade:  A

Course Description: This course examines (1) Web 2.0’s influence on how people learn and work and (2) what we, as instructional designers and performance technologies, might do to harness the power of Web 2.0 and its related tools for educational purposes. A combined theoretical and practical Page 2 of 7 focus is taken to this topic as students compare and contrast traditional approaches with Web 2.0 ones.

 

Key Learnings:  Gained knowledge of and comfort with various Web 2.0 tools for use in learning and performance.  Realization that social media offers alternative learning options that are dynamic and community oriented.

Managing Instructional Development

Course Description: This course is an introduction to procedures for managing instructional development projects and organizations; Includes project and organizational design and development, staff development, and leadership principles.

 

Key Learnings:  Project management techniques and tools utilizing methodology to develop impactful learning and improvement solutions. Completed a five step project from initiation to planning and scope development to implementation leadership and stakeholder management to implementation and evaluation that resulted in a comprehensive integrated final project report.

Performance Systems Analysis

Fall 2013                    Instructor:   Dr. C. Darren Brooks                                                                                      Final Grade:  A

Course Description: This course is an introduction to human-performance technology (HPT) and familiarizes students with HPT theoretical foundations and practical methodology through a performance systems analysis (PSA) project. The course covers systems thinking, systematic processes involved in conducting a PSA, as well as PSA models and their application for identifying performance gaps and recommending solutions.

 

Key Learnings:  Gained understanding of the HPT process and related models, conducted gap and cause analyses as part of a course group project that culminated in a comprehensive, five phased performance systems analysis report.  As a result, abstract learnings became practical knowledge that I applied and saw in action.

Fundamentals of Management

Course Description: The goal of this course is to enhance students’ managerial and organizational skills by developing an understanding of the underlying theoretical and practical aspects of three domains of management: (1) strategic management, (2) organizational behavior (OB), and (3) human resource management (HRM).

 

Key Learnings:  Roles and functions of management, organizational designs and structural elements, organizational mission and vision, environmental analysis, program and performance evaluation, managing through change .

Theories of Social Psychology

Field Laboratory Internship

Fall 2015                    Instructor:   Dr. Susan Losh                                                                                             Final Grade:  A

Course Description: Social Psychology studies social interaction, social processes, and the interplay among the person, culture and society in attitudes, beliefs and socialization. This course introduces you to the many perspectives social psychologists use in our work. Social Psychology is a separate discipline which allows us the flexibility to explore substantive areas as diverse as pressures toward conformity, ethnic prejudice, or child and adult development.

 

Key Learnings:  A deeper understanding of the social dynamics that work to affect group cohesion and productivity.

Spring 2016                    Instructor:   Dr. James Klein                                                                                        Final Grade: TBD

Course Description: Three credit internship participating as an assistant coach on a middle school track and field team. Objective is to educate the young athletes to develop healthy habits that will continue beyond the season.  Tasked with curriculum development  and delivery of two short modules per week discussed briefly at the conclusion of each practice and provided via e mail and on a school intranet website.
